Baby Would Rather Play With Packing Boxes

When babies are still in that infant stage, their curiosity regarding this new world means their attention is captivated rather quickly. But as they grow into their first year and beyond, they begin to move and discover what lies beyond the crib. So we parents respond by looking for toys that both entertain and teach. We buy baby toys that teach shapes and colors; building blocks that encourage creativity; and ring-toss or bean bag games for developing dexterity. But as a parent who went through this myself I discovered a strange phenomenon. Sometimes baby would rather play with the packing boxes.

I’ve witnessed children mesmerized with cardboard boxes for hours on end. They repeatedly bang on the flaps with their tiny little hands. They’ll try to stick the corner in their mouths. Every now and again they’ll even crawl inside like the box like it’s their own private condo. It’s amazing.

Even more fun to watch is a toddler with a piece of bubble wrap. Show him a time or two how you can pop the bubbles, then stand back and let him entertain himself all afternoon. He will attack those bubbles until every last one of them is broken. And he’ll laugh hysterically every time one of them pops. Who knew packing supplies could be so much fun? Apparently the kids have known for quite some time.

So if your children find the boxes more entertaining than the toys that were inside them, don’t worry. That same natural curiosity that draws them to the boxes will also draw them to the toys at some point. Just relax and let baby follow his instincts. He’ll learn just as much with the boxes as he will with even the best toys. I know. I’ve raised three of them.
